About the event

Join BYC member Paul Kamen for a Celestial Navigation Workshop follow-up session:

This evening will be designed primarily for participants who have just completed the all-day class on September 27th, but will also include enough introductory theory to be welcoming and engaging for those with no prior experience in celestial navigation.

A note from Paul:

Aloha Navigators!

This Friday, 10/3, is the first "First Friday Chalk Talk" of the winter season. At Berkeley YC, 6-8 pm. Topic is Celestial Navigation by Computer. My bi-annual one-day, all-day workshop compresses what's typically a 6-week course into one long day (no computers or calculators allowed). On Friday, with the help of my favorite celestial software, we'll try to compress it into just two hours.

Astronomically it's not the best date for this. At sunset, the moon and all the bright planets will be well below the horizon. But clear skies are forecast, so with luck we'll be able to shoot Arcturus, the brightest visible star on Friday evening at magnitude 0.1. I'll bring a few sextants with high magnification telescopes. At 6:30 PM Arcturus will be 35 degrees 45 minutes above the western horizon, bearing 267 degrees true.

Or, arrive an hour early at 5 to get a sun sight before it sets behind the usual fog bank. Please sign in as my guest if you're not a BYC member. No charge, but there's an entry requirement: Bring a portable computer, laptop or tablet that can run the web-based sight reduction program found at

Also please review the attached document with some basic definitions and celestial jargon.
