Background

Article III, of the Berkeley Yacht Club Bylaws:
Sec. 11 - MEMBER’S OBLIGATIONS. It shall be the obligation of every REGULAR, ASSOCIATE, or YOUTH member, in addition to all other obligations set forth in these By-laws, to serve at least one weekend day or holiday per year as Officer-of-the-Day at the clubhouse. The duties of the Officer-of-the-Day shall include welcoming guests of the Club and visiting boaters, assisting visiting boats in mooring at the Club docks and otherwise caring for the facilities during his or her tour of duty. If a member cannot serve on the day appointed, it shall be his or her obligation to secure a replacement. Other duties in lieu of the above may be substituted with the consent of the Vice Commodore or his or her designee.
Article VIII of the Berkeley Yacht Club House Rules:
B. It shall be the obligation of every member, with the exception of officers and directors, in addition to all other obligations, to serve from 1400 to 1900 on at least one weekend day or holiday per year as Officer of the Day.
C. The Officer of the Day duties include welcoming guests to the club and tending bar. Officers of the Day shall remain on duty until 1900 unless released by the ranking officer present or the manager.

While the Officer of the Day program has evolved over the years, our primary goal these days is simply to encourage our members to visit the club and participate in club life. We've endeavored to make serving as Officer of the Day a light lift, and we encourage those serving to bring friends and have fun.

Who has to serve?

Any Regular, Associate, or Youth member is required to serve as Officer of the Day​. Senior members are considered Regular or Associate members with discounted dues.

​Do I have to serve on the day I've been scheduled?

Not necessarily! You may pay the opt-out fee, which is currently $75. You can also sign up for a volunteer shift or get credit for a previous volunteer shift you've already served during the calendar year. You can also trade your shift with another member.

Can I reschedule?

Sure! Just let us know when you can make it to the club on a Saturday or Sunday between 1400 and 1900.

What time do I have to be at the club?

You should be at the club for the entirety of the 1400-1900 (2p-7p) window unless relieved by a BOD member or the club manager.​

What will I be doing?

That's up to you! Those with RBS certification can serve at the bar. If you want to bring games or schedule an informal event, you're welcome to do that as well. There is always a list of work items at the club as well. We won't ask you to do anything you're not comfortable with or willing to do.​​
