Subject: Columbia River Graveyard of the Pacific

Captain Dan Jordan grew up sailing on San Francisco Bay and has always enjoyed activities on

the water.

Shortly after graduating from the California Maritime Academy in 1980, he moved to the

Portland area to work as a third mate on Army Corps of Engineers dredges after the eruption of

Mount St. Helens.

“Cap’n Dan” spent 24 years at sea in the Merchant Marine with 12 of these years as captain of

freighters trading all over the world. He has carried all types of cargoes from bulk, ro-ro and

containers, to breakbulk, military and heavy project cargoes.

During this time, he concurrently served as an officer in the US Navy Reserve where some of his

assignments were as an instructor at the Navy Ship Handling School in Little Creek, Virginia.

Cap’n Dan has been a Columbia River Bar Pilot for the past 21 years. He is also involved in

multiple maritime related issues, including the American Pilot Association’s pilot transfer safety

committee and the International Chamber of Shipping’s “Guide to Helicopter/Ship Operations”.ws.
