Please arrive by 6:00 p.m.
Beginning at 6:30 p.m., participants will collect samples from the Berkeley Yacht Club docks, followed by a live photomicrography presentation at 7:00 p.m.
See real-time microscope video of the fascinating “fouling community” that grows on boat hulls and pilings — from tunicates and bryozoans to tiny crustaceans — and learn how these hidden ecosystems shape our local waters.
Michael Grindstaff is a lifelong naturalist and former professional outdoor guide with experience leading river, 4x4, canyoneering, and hiking tours across the American West. He also has a background in winter climbing and ski mountaineering, and is currently refitting a 45-foot ketch for a future transpacific passage. His work in photomicrography combines art and science to reveal the unseen beauty of the natural world, using high-resolution imaging techniques to connect people with the extraordinary life that thrives beyond ordinary
