The Frigate L'Hermione - Presentation and Fundraiser

In 1780, Lafayette sailed to America aboard L'Hermione to announce France’s support for the American Revolution. A replica of this three-masted ship was constructed in Rochefort's historic Navy yards between 1997 and 2014 by the nonprofit association "Hermione-Lafayette." Over the years, the project was funded by over 5 million visitors, corporations, private donations, and state agency support. Nicknamed the "Freedom Frigate," L'Hermione has sailed over 22,000 nautical miles on four voyages, with 550 volunteer sailors trained to operate the ship in 18th-century tradition, fostering solidarity and human values.

In 2015, L'Hermione embarked on an inaugural voyage to the US, retracing Lafayette’s journey. It visited key historical sites of the American Revolution and welcomed 52,000 visitors. Since then, the ship has continued to travel, showcasing French craftsmanship and historical navigation techniques. During routine maintenance in 2021, significant damage caused by slow-growing fungus was discovered in its hull. Major repairs are underway, with plans to return the ship to the water by 2028. The Hermione-Lafayette association ambitions to organize a new voyage to America, including stops along the West Coast and participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

This presentation will explore the historical significance of L'Hermione, offer insights into modern life aboard the ship, and feature an exclusive painting auction, all in support of ongoing repair efforts.
