From the Commodore's Cabin: Don't Miss these May Events

I’m pleased to report that the 52nd Annual Wheeler Regatta was a success, thanks in no small part to the multitude of folks who came down to the club, whether to enjoy the food and entertainment, to volunteer on the water or in the kitchen, or all of the above!
While many folks were instrumental in the success of the weekend, Rear Commodore Mari Bird was absolutely essential. From procuring and organizing the oyster bar, to organizing and running the dinner, Mari was everywhere but still found a moment or two to enjoy the company of friends and clubmates.
I also want to thank long-time club member Maria Wallace who for years has singlehandedly prepared the Oysters Rockefeller for Wheeler weekend. She had help in the kitchen this year by way of Judy Lee, who has been leading our kitchen and menu planning for most events, including the Friday beercan dinners alongside Chef William. Thank you ladies!
Looking ahead, the Old Salts Dinner and 86th anniversary of Berkeley Yacht Club celebration is coming up on May 17. This is another classic BYC event, and I highly recommend anyone who hasn’t been to an Old Salts Dinner check it out. It’s a great opportunity to meet some folks who are deeply intertwined in our club’s history and to celebrate the traditions we’ve built along the way.
And if you can’t make it for the Old Salts Dinner on Saturday, you may want to check out the second event of our Sunday Soundz concert series on Sunday, May 18 featuring Fred McCarty. As a reminder, Sunday Soundz concerts are free for BYC members and their guests. We’ll have a bartender on duty and encourage folks to bring a potluck dish. We’ve made an effort to find some talented and notable artists for this series, and we can only continue them if folks come down to enjoy them.
As always, I’m grateful for our many many volunteers, which are too numerous to list by name. But if you haven’t already, please consider volunteering for a Friday night dinner shift or a member dinner or race committee soon! Any volunteer day counts for your Officer of the Day for the year.
