From the Commodore's Cabin: Looking Forward to Spring

Writer: Graeme LoweGraeme Lowe

I am pleased to report that the 2025 Member Satisfaction Survey has closed and we received some really great feedback. You can find a summary of results for each question HERE (or view the downloadable pdf in the files section of the website), but in a nutshell, those who responded believe the club is a good value and largely on the right track. We’ve identified our primary goal for the year: increasing the quality of our event offerings while maintaining the existing spread of different types of events and overall quantity of events. Our secondary focus is to invest in our clubhouse and facilities. We’ve doubled our budget for repairs and maintenance and V/C Roger Mason and the Maintenance Committee are looking forward to some impactful projects that you’re sure to notice when you’re at the club.

My next project as Commodore is to get the Officer of the Day program going for 2025. S/C Mary Garfein put a lot of time and effort into this program in 2023 and 2024. It is required by our bylaws for a few reasons, but first and foremost to get folks to the club. As a largely volunteer club, however, we’ve also relied on our Officers of the Day to help out at dinners, races, and other club events. Toward that end, for 2025, anyone who volunteers for an event that has a sign-up sheet or for which we make a call for volunteers will be considered to have satisfied their Officer of the Day duty for the year. We will rely on Captains of the Month to coordinate sign-ups to volunteer for events or scheduling folks for traditional Officer of the Day duty on a monthly basis. Serving as Captain of the Month is another way to satisfy your Officer of the Day duty. Please let me know directly if that’s something that interests you.

Can’t make it to the club? No problem…just reach out to commodore@berkeleyyc.org or manager@berkeleyyc.org, and we’ll gladly find a way for you to help the club from wherever you are and with whatever abilities you can offer. As a reminder, the bylaws stipulate that every Regular, Associate, and Youth (not Junior) member serve or pay a fee. If you let us know in advance that you’re not willing or able to serve, you may elect to pay a $75 fee. If we don’t hear from you at all (despite attempts to reach out to you) and you don’t volunteer for an event all year, the fee increases to $150. I personally hope we charge no fees this year. I’m more than happy to speak with anyone who may have questions or concerns.

Stay tuned for more details as we head into April and May with the Wheeler Regatta and Old Salts Dinner coming up, along with some interesting and innovative events. I’m looking forward to a great spring at Berkeley Yacht Club!
