The Berkeley Yacht Club annually sponsors a regatta in memory of one of its most colorful past commodores, Rollo Wheeler. He and his wife, Barbara, were lost at sea while vacationing in Mexico near La Paz in 1974.
This year we are celebrating the 51st Rollo Wheeler Memorial Regatta with an added twist -- a benefit for Special Olympics.
Wheeler weeks starts on Friday with Oysters served in the bar from 4:00 to 6:00. This is followed by the usual Friday Night Beer Can race and Barbecue. We will also be selling Wheeler Regatta shirts..
Saturday, following the races, Oysters will be served in the bar. At 6:00 pm, we are serving a Lasagna Dinner at $28 per plate. We will be joined by some Special Olympians and their families. At the time of dinner purchase, you will be given an option to donate to Special Olympics. Throughout the evening, we will be selling Wheeler Regatta shirts. The Special Olympians would be happy to sign your shirt!
The weekend concludes with Sunday races and an award ceremony at the Club.
This weekend is being put on by our members. Please consider signing up for a shift of oyster shucking (bring your own gloves!), dinner set up or clean up. It takes a village to make the magic happen.
